Noosa JP's carry on 650 year tradition
What is an institution in Commonwealth countries is Justice's Of The Peace. It was Edward III in 1350 who formalised the appointment of leading citizens to help manage the English judicial system. Edward gave local 'justices' power, not only to investigate crimes and make arrests, but to try cases. With this, an enduring fixture in the administration of English justice was established.
While todays Justice Of The Peace cannot make arrests or try cases, they carry on the tradition of service to the community that Edward created in the 14th century.
Noosa based Aubrey Cannon is a case in point. Appointed in 1997, the film buff and marriage celebrant sees his role as important to assisting the process of the law. "What few people appreciate is that a police search or arrest warrant must be validated by a Justice Of The Peace. We have to check the documentation to ensure that it meets all the necessary legal requirements".
Beside witnessing a wide range of documents, a Justice of the Peace can be called as an independent witness when police interviews are conducted. It's the JP's role to ensure that procedures are followed to the letter of the law.
"I know there are a number of people in the Noosa district who have come from other regions or interstate who are JP's. I'd love to hear from them so we can establish a register". People who have an interest in providing this valuable community service can contact Aubrey Cannon on, 0416 041 349.
Corinne Mikkelsen, Marketing Manager of Noosa Civic said "With the services of JP's increasingly in demand, Noosa Civic put in a 'signing desk' which is manned every Friday from 10am to 2pm. This has been a great convenience to the public".
